School Council

Our school has a council made up of pupils from each year group. Each class elects two representatives (a boy and a girl) who then make a speech to the year group and the year group will vote for two Year Group Representatives. The full school council is made up of the 32 Class Representatives although sometimes only the Year Group representatives meet.

The school council are a useful way for pupils to have a say in how the school is run. They can feedback issues that are important to the children to the staff as well as help organise events and come up with fundraising ideas. We have dedicated Pupil Voice time so that pupils can share ideas and communicate with their representatives. For example, lately children have considered how to improve our reward system and how to raise money for a school in Africa.

Activity Weeks

When a lot of pupils go away on school trips the children who stay behind take part in an Activity Week. For example, last year when the majority of Year 6 was away in Shropshire the children who were in school took part in a Pirate themed week.

As part of the week they designed, built and tested their own pirate ships. They researched pirate legends and made their own pirate flags. They also had the opportunity to build a CD Rom about their pirate. To finish the week they went to see 'Pirates of the Carribean 3' at the cinema.

Year 8 used an activity week to carry out an Enterprise project where they worked in teams to plan and design their own prom and then present their design to a panel of judges. The pupils worked extremely well and planned down to the last detail, thinking about a theme, entertainment, refreshments and decoration. The winning team's designs were used in the actual prom.

Eco Schools

We are currently trying to make the school a more environmentally friendly place and to raise awareness generally about ecological issues.  As part of this we are working towards getting the Green Flag award from Eco-Schools. We have just been awarded the Bronze Award which means we are now well on our way. We have also received the Sustainable Learning Certificate for Level 1.

The aims of the Eco-Schools programme are:

  • to make schools a more stimulating place in which to learn;

  • to reduce the environmental impact of the whole school on the community; and

  • to work towards education for sustainable development and a better quality of life for local and global communities.

We have a dedicated group of ‘Eco-Warriors’ who have conducted an audit on key areas such as water usage, energy, litter, recycling and waste disposal.  We have identified our key targets: to start composting for the school garden and to reduce our water and electricity consumption as well as recycling more.  If you have any finished ink cartridges from your printer please send them into school – we are raising money for the Woodland Trust by sending them to be recycled.

Mrs Robinson has given the Eco-Warriors a £50 budget and the group has decided, after conducting careful research, to spend the money on water saving devices for the school toilets.  Mrs Chopping is working with the group on their main target to set up composting bins in the school garden.  We ran a poster competition to help remind us to save water.  See below for the winner of our 'Save Water' poster competition. This design was by Jake Morrison. Since we ran this competition Dr Rose has agreed to put push taps into the children's toilets to help save water.

We will keep you informed of our progress.  If you have any comments, advice or offers of help please feel free to contact the school.

Special Projects

At any given time there are always a lot of special projects being carried out across the school in connection with different departments. For example, at the moment four children from Year 8 are taking part in the Northumberland Connections project. Northumberland Connections is a company set up by Year 8 pupils from different middle schools in our area. They are working together to investigate how ICT is used by businesses across Northumberland.

There are four separate teams within the company - the administrative team who are organising the budget, trips to businesses and the final event, the PR team who are liaising with businesses, the image and content team who will put together the group's findings and the website design team who will put the images and content onto a website. The company is being run by the pupils themselves with support from their ICT teachers.

Other projects being pursued at the moment include a new biodiversity competition being considered by the Science Department and Eco-Schools team.

Global Links

As a school we are trying to build global awareness into the fabric of our daily lives. One way we are looking to improve is to build links with two schools abroad. One school is Riting Primary School in Kapenguria, Kenya and we are looking at ways to communicate and fundraise for them. Please see our 'Events' page, or click here, to find out about our latest fundraising activities.

The other school is based in Czestochowa, Poland and we are investigating how to link up with them using ICT as well as by more traditional methods.
