Careful planning

At Lindisfarne the teaching of English forms a major part of the school curriculum. Not only is English taught as a subject in its own right, but its value in providing many of the skills utilised in other subjects is explored and recognised.
This partnership between areas of curriculum has great value and can be very beneficial to the students, providing them with a variety of real situations, purposes and audiences, through which they can develop their language skills.
The planning and delivery of English is the responsibility of the teachers concerned with a particular year group and subject leaders. Careful planning ensures that all students are given a balanced curriculum in all three National Curriculum modes, speaking and listening, reading and writing which includes spelling and handwriting.

As a school we aim to:

• instil in the children a love and appreciation of language and reading;
• provide the children with the necessary skills to become effective communicators;
• help them to think and transmit ideas;
• provide continuity and progression.

The school provides a stimulating environment where children are motivated to think about their experiences and express themselves as fully as possible in speaking and writing. Children are encouraged to be actively involved in their own learning rather than being passive recipients of knowledge and are constantly challenged to extend their use of language in a variety of situations.
