Maths Maths co-ordinator - Mrs L Miller Children enjoy Mathematics when they understand what they are doing and can relate their learning to the world around them. Our aims in Numeracy/Mathematics lessons are to increase the pupils’ confidence in their own ability, to encourage oral participation in discussion, to facilitate the sharing of strategies with their peers and to highlight methods which they may not have considered. Below are just some of the questions which lead to interactive learning and help create a fuller comprehension of mathematical concepts, allowing each child to achieve their potential :- • When is it beneficial to use mental procedures? All year groups follow the National Numeracy Strategy. In KS2 (Years 5 and 6) children receive a daily Numeracy lesson whilst children in KS3 (Years 7 and 8) have 4 lessons per week. There are 5 ability sets in each year group. Each lesson begins with an oral/mental starter, in which every child is encouraged to take an active role. The ability to explain procedures and strategies is a great advantage to pupils. This concept is further consolidated by the plenary session, in which pupils are encouraged to explain what they have discovered during their main activity session. Maths lessons are conducted in bright and airy classrooms which are fully equipped with interactive whiteboards and software which facilitate the use of engaging materials such as games and starter activities. A range of text books are available in each Key Stage including a Collins Maths Frameworking Scheme in KS3 which supports the implementation of the KS3 Strategy. These resources are supplemented with differentiated worksheets to support personalised learning. Pupil progress is regularly assessed and careful monitoring ensures that all children are given help and support to achieve their end of year target. Movement between sets is encouraged to allow for differing rates of development. All children are encouraged to achieve their very best. Lower ability children are taught in small groups and have additional help provided by Learning Support Assistants, whilst more able children enjoy a variety of extension activities including Maths Challenges and problem solving activities. All children receive a weekly piece of homework and a Maths ‘drop–in’ clinic The school has strong links with feeder schools and the Duchess High School. In Year 8 High School Maths staff visit the school to meet Year 8 pupils and observe and teach some lessons. Lindisfarne is an exciting place to learn Maths where the majority of pupils make above expected progress. We provide a high quality teaching environment and constantly strive to improve. Our results reflect our pursuit of excellence. |
