Sustainable Learning Award

Well done to the hard working Eco-Mark Action Group!  This dedicated group of pupils, staff, parents and governors are working to make the school more environmental friendly.

The school has now received a Level 1 Sustainable Learning Certificate in recognition of the work they have done so far with regarding to improving energy and water efficiency in school.  In order to get the certificate we had to satisfy six criteria such as setting up a team, carrying out an audit, monitoring utility use, developing curriculum activities about energy and water efficiency, raising awareness and making savings.

The pupils in particular have worked really hard to get this far and thoroughly deserve the recognition this certificate brings for their commitment.  We are now working towards achieving Level 2 (there are three levels altogether) and hope you will support us in our efforts.

Tarmac School Biodiversity Challenge - Biodiversity Action Plan Awards

Tarmac are an award winning organisation that pride themselves in encouraging wildlife and native plants to grow and thrive within their quarries. They wanted to give the children of North Northumberland a chance to show that they could work towards the same goals as Tarmac have. We were challenged to produce a Biodiversity Action Plan for our school grounds.

All of the year 7 children were involved in producing action plans for the school garden in these areas: Shrubbery, Wetland, Wildspace, Veggie patch and Trees. The best of these plans were picked and sent away to Tarmac for judging. We won the award which was presented by Dr David Bellamy at Alnwick Castle.

Tarmac are going to try to make the childrens plans a reality, with the help from Dr Rachel Penn (Ecologist) and the Northumberland Wildlife Trust. The initial stages have already started and we are hoping to commence the project in Spring this year.
